Infertility & IUI (Intrauterine Insemination):
About 18 % of the couples experience difficulty in conceiving & a proportion of them may require assisted conception treatment to alleviate continuing infertility. IUI is an effective, yet cheaper first line treatment in properly selected cases & is least invasive as compare to IVF or ICSI.
In this process the female is given medications to stimulate her ovaries & then the husband's seminal fluid is taken. Seminal fluid is processed & good sperms are separated, which then are inseminated in the female partner.
Latest Techniques in IUI:
For Sperm preparation new methods are in use now which were previously known to be used for IVF & ICSI only, including:
Reactive Oxygen species causes lipid peroxidation of Sperm Membrane, thus leading to the loss of Motility & decreased fertilizing ability. While Normal Sperms produce small amount of these Superoxide Radicals , the production is many times more in dead or defective spermatozoa & white blood cells found in ejaculate.
With Density Gradient Sperm Centrifugation , higher return of motile sperms has been demonstrated. It also enhances the percentage of sperms with the normal morphology where the fresh ejaculate contains 5 % or more normal forms. It is a useful tool in patients with Subnormal Sperm Parameters.
